This year’s Tour de France is the 105th in the history of the race and will take place from Saturday,  July 7 through Sunday, July 29. There will be 19 teams competing for some big prizes.

The grand prize, for the first-place rider, is 500,000 euro (which is about 580,000 USD) and ranges in amount from there. The contest awards 140 riders at least 1,000 euro ($1,166). That amount doesn’t seem so shabby until you realize that these riders are competing over two grueling weeks and many will walk away with much less than the cost of their time, not to mention training, equipment, and other various costs.

  • Fifth Place = $50,000 Euro
  • Sixth Place = $23,000 Euro

  • Ninth Place = $4,500 Euro
  • Tenth Place = $3,800 Euro
  • 11th Place = $3,000 Euro
  • 12th Place = $2,700 Euro
  • 13th Place = $2,500 Euro
  • 14th Place = $2,100 Euro
  • 15th Place = $2,000 Euro
  • 16th Place = $1,500 Euro
  • 17th Place = $1,300 Euro
  • 18th Place = $1,200 Euro
  • 19th Place = $1,100 Euro
  • 20th-160th Place = $1,000 Euro

The total amount being awarded is 2,287,750 euro, but there are adding opportunities to win additional money as well including age groups, team prizes, and jersey bonuses.

The race takes place over 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3,351 kilometers (approx. 2082 miles). For the most part, the race will take place in France, though there will be a small stint of approx. nine miles which will stretch into Spain. There are 11 cities/stages that have never been a part of the race prior Fontenay-le-Comte, Mouilleron-Saint-Germain, Sarzeau, Dreux, La Rosière, Trie-sur-Baïse, Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, Espelette, and Houilles.

The race starts in Noirmoutier-en-l’Île and will end in Paris Champs-Élysées.

The winner of the tour will win 500,000 Euro which translates to just over $580,000.
