Davis Bertans stays in San Antonio to become their new starting small forward

Davis Bertans is returning to the San Antonio Spurs, marking the best thing to to happen to the organization this offseason.

The San Antonio Spurs are in need of a little stability this summer. Enter Davis Bertans. According to Sportando, San Antonio has re-signed Bertans to a four-year, $20 million deal.

The 25-year-old forward appeared in 77 games for the Spurs last season, averaging a career high 5.9 points, two rebounds, and one assist in 14.1 minutes. He shot 44 percent from the field and 37 percent from three. Bertans played in all five playoff games, averaging 3.4 points.

Not much has gone right for San Antonio this offseason. Just after the Finals, franchise star Kawhi Leonard reportedly requested a trade. Leonard’s unhappiness was chronicled throughout the season as he attempted to rehab a quad injury suffered in the 2017 playoffs. The Spurs have yet to move Leonard, who reportedly only wants to play for the Los Angeles Lakers, but trade talks are still ongoing.

Franchise cornerstone Tony Parker surprised the NBA world by signing a two-year deal with the Charlotte Hornets, splitting with the Spurs after 17 seasons. Shortly after Parker agreed to terms with Charlotte, Kyle Anderson signed a four-year, $37.2 million offer sheet with the Memphis Grizzlies. San Antonio declined to match the offer.

Bertans is 6-foot-10, 210 pounds and listed as a power forward. But with the uncertainty surrounding the small forward position, he may be the Spurs new starting small forward this season. A frontcourt of Bertans, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Pau Gasol would certainly be….something.
