Being one of the only folks walking around NBA Summer League in Las Vegas wearing a Grizzlies jersey who isn’t actually playing for the Grizzlies summer league team meant I got asked a lot of questions about Kyle Anderson. Other podcast and blogger friends wanted to know how I felt. (“I’m just worried he’s gonna take Chandler Parsons minutes” was my usual reply.) My Lyft driver, who was stunned to meet a Memphis fan, wanted to know if he was overpaid. The guys working the sports book where I recklessly bet summer league games wanted to know whether the signing was good or bad.

On the latest episode of Fastbreak Breakfast I explain that after thinking about it for days and reading and listening to others I’m pretty sure acquiring Anderson has several positives and negatives. Does it make the Grizzlies better immediately? Sure. Does it make the Grizzlies a playoff team? Unsure. Will he be an appropriately paid wing player for a future Memphis squad built around Jaren Jackson Jr.

That’s the hope.

Also covered on this episode:

  • Does the Zach LaVine contract once again demonstrate the restricted free agency is terrible?
  • Despite the reactions of most, are the Rockets being prudent by not paying to keep Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute?
  • Are any rookies falling on their face in summer league?
  • Who wouldn’t want a self-driving car to pick them up?
