Here’s the breakdown of the prize money at the 2018 edition of The Open Championship from Carnoustie.

The Open Championship is the oldest major championship in golf and winning the Claret Jug can certainly change the course of a career. It can also change the winner’s bank account a bit as well, even if the total purse is still a bit behind the other majors.

The 2018 edition of The Open boasts a $10.5 million purse, up $250,000 from a year ago, which is the same as last year’s PGA Championship, which has yet to announce next month’s prize money. The Masters offered $11 million to the field and last month’s U.S. Open offered a cool $12 million.

The winner of this year’s Open Championship, which will be played at Carnoustie for the eighth time and the first time since Padraig Harrington won the first of his two consecutive titles in 2007, will take home $1.89 million, which is the standard 18 percent share of the total purse. 18 percent, 18 holes…you know, because it’s golf. Get it? The runner-up will cash a $1.134 million check.

Next: Best golfer from every state

So even if this week’s winner won’t take home as much as Patrick Reed did from Augusta ($1.98 million) or Brooks Koepka did from Shinnecock Hills ($2.16 million), don’t feel too sorry for the man that emerges victorious in Scotland come Sunday afternoon. The top 70 and ties will play the weekend following the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday. The ties at the end of the week obviously brings different numbers into play than what you’ll see below. For example, take last year’s PGA Championship. Three players tied for second, meaning that the total payout for second, third and fourth place were combined and split evenly. Then you can move into what the fifth place finisher would receive and so on and so forth.
