The spotlight will be on the UFC’s light heavyweight division as Mauricio “Shogun” Rua meets Anthony Smith, and Corey Anderson squares-off with Glover Teixeira on the main card of UFC Hamburg

If Daniel Cormier hadn’t knocked-out Stipe Miocic to become the UFC’s latest, two-division champion earlier this month at UFC 226, Sunday’s light heavyweight headliner between Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Anthony Smith at UFC Hamburg would be your average 205-pound contest. But Cormier’s comments regarding Rua as a potential opponent have turned Sunday’s main event into a very intriguing light heavyweight bout.

Rua carries a three-fight winning streak into UFC Hamburg, but the former champion hasn’t fought since defeating Gian Villante in March 2017. An experienced pro fighter, Smith earned the biggest win of his career when he knocked-out former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans at June’s UFC 225, and adding a victory over an established contender like Rua to his resume would undoubtedly give Smith a spot in the division’s top-10.

Currently ranked third in the world’s premier light heavyweight division, Glover Teixeira recovered from his 2017, knockout-loss to Alexander Gustafsson with last December’s opening-round win over Misha Cirkunov. But Teixeira has losses in three of his last five fights, and Corey Anderson will be hoping to earn his second straight victory after defeating Patrick Cummins in April.

The weigh-ins have become a central part of every UFC event, and we’ve seen how results at the scales can impact a fighter’s present and future. Just last week, Cormier responded to Yoel Romero’s call-out with a reminder of the Brazilian’s recent struggles at the scale, and 2018 has already seen many fighters miss weight.
