Charles Oakley believes The Admiral David Robinson was wrong to speak sourly of Kawhi Leonard and should have let “Kawhi be Kawhi.”

One of the NBA’s toughest vets ever, Charles Oakley, feels his one-time peer on the court David Robinson was wrong to criticize Kawhi Leonard to the media. Oakley joined Frank Isola and Brian Scalabrine on Sirius XM Radio today and expressed his displeasure at The Admiral getting into Kawhi’s business. Robinson recently appeared on ESPN’s The Jump, where he spoke candidly of what he thought of Kawhi’s relationship with the San Antonio Spurs and himself personally.

Robinson didn’t mince words, commenting “It’s one of the oddest situations I’ve seen since i’ve been in pro basketball. He’s a hard guy to understand, he’s a hard guy to read. San Antonio has a reputation for taking care of our players, almost too much. Now we got a guy who says he felt pressured to play, which is well… Tough.”

Robinson commented on a personal level that he wasn’t able to reach Leonard most recently, only getting an opportunity to speak to his uncle:

"I talked to his uncle, does that count? He’s a hard guy. He’s just quiet. I’ve reached out to him several times and just never hear anything back from him. I think the whole time he’s been here I’ve talked to him a handful of times. You know, I can count on one hand how many words he’s said to me."

Oakley did not feel it was necessary for Robinson to insert himself into Kawhi’s injury situation with the Spurs, feeling it was playing up to what the media wants for a headline.

Charles Oakley on Robinson’s Kawhi Leonard comments:

"I think David’s wrong. David played in this league for a lot of time, he did a lot for the NBA, his family, the fans in San Antonio. I don’t think that was his business to get into with Kawhi Leonard and what’s going on with management. I don’t ever know David Robinson to speak about no issues. He’s [Kawhi] a quiet kid. I know Pop is a great coach, and this and that but sometimes you rub players the wrong way. That’s one of the players I’ve seen play in this league always to himself, and never got into it, never was a bad guy. He did it as a team, the type of guy you want on your team, a 2 way guy, made himself an all-star.I think David should stay out of this, and let Kawhi be Kawhi. He don’t wanna talk, he ain’t say anything all this time, so does he have to start now? I think the press want to make stories out of stuff, it’s like my incident in Vegas over $100 dollars. They wanna just blow stuff up."

Ice Cube should try to sign Robinson for one more Big 3 showdown with Oakley. Sure, Oakley is currently a Head Coach rather than a player there but who’s to say one more player-coach game can’t be in the works for a worthy adversary in The Admiral.

It would be must-see TV after this interview. Kawhi Leonard has not commented on David Robinson’s comments as of yet, and seems unlikely to based on his past reputation.
