Carson Wentz getting closer to return for Eagles

After recovering from a torn ACL, Carson Wentz is close to taking back his starting QB job.

It’s been a very long year for Carson Wentz.

Sure, over the course of the last eight months, he’s gotten a Super Bowl ring, and even a wedding ring. But all of it has happened during the process of coming back from a devastating knee injury.

At last, as the NFL preseason is set to kick off next month, Wentz is inching closer and closer to retaking the starting quarterback job for the Philadelphia Eagles. He isn’t quite there yet, as he has yet to be cleared for contact at Eagles training camp. But soon enough, he’ll finally get back to where he wants to be.

There isn’t a set date yet, but Wentz is greatly looking forward to his big return.

“I’m not really sure, I’d probably say it’s September 6,” Wentz said, according to USA Today, referring to the Eagles’ season opener against the Atlanta Falcons at Lincoln Financial Field. “That’s the goal, but we’ll see.

“We have a good plan in place, and as an athlete you want to be out there, but it’s not my call, it’s not coach’s call. It’s a culmination of things.”

Last year, Wentz was on his way to what might’ve been an MVP season in just his second year in the NFL. Through 13 starts, Wentz threw 33 touchdowns and just seven interceptions, completing over 60 percent of his passes. But then his ACL got shredded during a December game in Los Angeles, and all the glory went to backup quarterback Nick Foles when the Eagles prevailed in Super Bowl LII.

Foles was named Super Bowl MVP, and all Wentz could do was watch from the sidelines. While Wentz definitely enjoyed getting to witness Philadelphia’s run to its first title in franchise history firsthand, there’s no doubt he wishes he was the one on the field leading the team to victory.

In 2018, Wentz will get the chance to reclaim some of that glory. He’ll just have to wait patiently for a few more weeks.
