Carson Wentz looks likely to start for Eagles in Week 1
The Philadelphia Eagles were able to win a Super Bowl without Carson Wentz, but it doesn’t look like they’ll have to replicate that feat in Week 1.
The health of quarterback Carson Wentz continues to be one of the dominating stories of the Eagles’ preseason.
Fortunately, Philadelphia fans are receiving good news about their franchise signal caller. All indications from the team’s coaching staff are that Wentz is going to be the starter when the 2018 season begins.
Nick Foles might be the only person upset to hear that. He led the team to a Super Bowl title after Wentz went down last season, but even he understands how much Wentz means to this team. Getting back to this season’s Super Bowl will require the third-year quarterback to return to his Pro Bowl form.
To do that, he obviously needs to enjoy a healthy campaign. Offensive coordinator Mike Groh isn’t trying to hide just how far along Wentz in his recovery.
He told reporters that his quarterback has been “in everything” during the team’s recent preseason activities. In other words, he isn’t being held back at all by his injury. That includes 11-on-11 work with a protective red jersey.
Wentz’s teammates are also taking notice of just how ready he seems to be. Tackle Lane Johnson describe his team’s offensive leader as having “an edge to him.” Center Travis Kelce is impressed that the coaching staff is allowing him to work on plays that require him to roll out and test that injured knee.
He correctly notes that everything is happening in a “controlled environment” but that’s true with most starting quarterbacks at this point in the preseason.

All of this is obviously great news for Eagles fans. It doesn’t mean Wentz is a lock to be under center when the season begins, but it’s clear he’s tracking in that direction. If the organization had any concerns at all about his current health, they’d be treating him a lot more cautiously at the moment.
Their confidence should give everyone a clear signal that Wentz will be ready to go when Week 1 arrives.
