It was finally Braden Holtby’s turn with the Stanley Cup on Tuesday, and it was just absolutely perfect on every possible level.

Believe it or not, Alex Ovechkin has let go of the Stanley Cup long enough to let his teammates have their day with it. Tuesday was Braden Holtby’s turn, and in classic Holtby fashion, it was as low key as it could possibly be.

The Capitals netminder brought the Stanley Cup to his home province of Saskatchewan, Canada, specifically where he was raised at a family farm (because of course he was) in Marshall which has a population of less than 600 people.

Probably the best moment of the day was when Braden Holtby was sharing the trophy with his son, Benjamin Holtby, and he already had a miniature version of the Stanley Cup. This was a full circle moment for Holtby, as he grew up playing hockey in the local rinks and started his dream of winning the Stanley Cup, and was now bringing it back to share that moment with his son.

Fun and adorable fact: Holtby has both of his kids names painted on the back of his goalie mask. For as serious as he is on the ice and with the media, seeing him so warm and affectionate with his family is absolutely heartwarming.

Holtby absolutely earned his day with the Stanley Cup after being the backbone of the Washington Capitals’ playoff run that netted them their first Stanley Cup in franchise history this past spring. He had a rough end to the regular season and didn’t even begin the playoffs as the starting goaltender, but when Philipp Grubauer dropped the ball, Holtby picked it up and ran with it.

Holtby was phenomenal at every turn, all leading to “The Save” in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Vegas Golden Knights. Holtby finished third in Conn Smythe voting for most valuable player of the postseason behind only Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov.

While it was great to see Holtby bring the Stanley Cup back to his hometown, hopefully this won’t be the last time we get to see him do so. The former Vezina winner still has something to prove this season after a shaky stretch last year that almost cost him his job, but surely he is up to challenge.
