5 MLB teams who can (and should) still make trade moves
4. Miami Marlins
The Marlins are the first of two teams here for purely the purpose of selling assets. The other three teams are buyers, but the Marlins still have chance to be big money sellers.
Miami has no hope of making the playoffs this year, or even next year. Philly, Washington, Atlanta and New York all are set up. The Mets have had a down year, and you can chalk it up as it won’t happen again.
They sit securely at the bottom of the division. All of the other teams should be 80-90 win teams for the next few years.
The fish in orange and blue need to sell, and sell hard. They still have a few guys of value, who could net some decent prospects and bonus money, playing for 2020 is the smart move here. They have several guys who should be easy to move, and were already checked in on by multiple teams.
They need to lower their value on Realmuto, he is of no real use to them, and we all know they won’t pay when the time comes. His value will never be higher.
They should move:
1. J.T. Realmuto (C): He is one of the better catchers in the game. He is currently batting .300 with 14 HR and 53 RBI. That is quality production from behind the dish. J.T. is tied for 5th in HR and is second in hits among his fellow catchers.
2. Derek Dietrich (OF): Currently is hitting above his career average, he sits a nice .278 average with 13 HR. He is having a career year in his age 29 season. If the Marlins don’t hope to contend until 2020, he will be 31 and on a bigger deal. That alone should be enough to get as much as you can now.
3. Jose Urena (SP) Now, it’s not often you hear that a team should deal their ace after the deadline, but here we are. The 26-year-old Urena has a horrid ERA of 4.66 with 101 strikeouts across 22 starts. His strike out total has him at 62nd in the league. If we just look at it from a numbers standpoint of the 61 players above him are all starters on one of the 30 teams he is a 3rd starter by way of strikeouts. He has youth, and once held much up-side, if they can get something for their struggling ace it would be a large win.
If you are not in contention, you do not need high-end players, or single use guys like Closers. Players in positions of importance — outfield, starting pitcher, catcher — will fetch a much higher value in a trade than their worth to their own team.
They missed selling multiple guys at the deadline here is their chance now, before maybe the best free agency class we have ever seen shows up.
