4. Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies are one of the many up-start teams this year as it seems some Goliaths have fallen. Their drafts have produced some helpful talent and they have managed to stay active in trades and FA. This team has taken advantage of the gift the Mets and Nationals have given them, and now sit atop the East. They came into the deadline needing to solidify their spot and they did just that with this haul.

Got: Aaron Loup (P), Wilson Ramos (C), Asdrubal Cabrera (INF)

Lost: Jacob Waguespack (P), Player to be named later (Rays), cash, Franklyn Kiilome (P)

If we are talking face value, they seem not fit for a top five winners list. But, if you take a closer look this was such a massive win. Ramos alone would have garnered them top-five considerations on pure value and team need alone. Asdrubal will help a struggling INF find balance as it has been some time since solid shortstop play has happened. Even with Asdrubal being a free agent after the year, getting Ramos and Cabrera for almost nothing could go down as one of the bigger deadline moves we have seen in recent years for this fighting team.

3. Atlanta Braves

The Braves might have boasted the best front office staff and moves the last year. With trades, free agency, off-season moves, and now the deadline. They have stocked up on a great mix of youth and vet talent. Lets also not forget, their plays in the international market, and over coming everything MLB has thrown at them after their last GM’s mistakes in that area. The Braves were a team who seemed destined for the cellar until their loaded system showed up and blew up this season. They sit just 1.5 games back as of now from first place in the NL East. Be honest, if you heard that last sentence three years ago you would have thought it came from a different dimension.

Got: Kevin Gausman (SP), Darren O’Day (RP),  Adam Duvall (OF), Brad Brach (RP), Johnny Venters (P)

Lost: Evan Phillips (P), Jean Carlos Encarnacion (INF), Brett Cumberland (C), Bruce Zimmerman (P), international slot money,  Lucas Sims (P), Matt Wisler (P), Preston Tucker (OF), international bonus money, international slot money

What a haul for the Braves. They got some quality pieces, and Duvall is locked up for several more years under team control. It’s also good use of international money, as they could not use it, it was like a free trade chip. This was a very well-played and designed deadline day for the Braves. One that can set them atop the East when it is all said and done. Gausman and Duvall will be major players on this team for years to come as the rest of their youth players are just getting warmed up. It never hurts to add vet RP to your team, when they combined have more playoff experience than almost the rest of the team combined. The moves here will echo throughout the teams history for the next three to four years.
