Why Dez Bryant Is a Must Draft Player in Fantasy Football

“He’s lost a step.”

“He’s no longer worth the headache.”

“His skills are completely diminished at this point of his career.”

“He’s washed up.”

Sound familiar? Just take a look at any comment section of an article that mentions the former Cowboy, and you’ll find what seems like an endless thread of similar opinions. In the interest of full disclosure, as a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan who had grown tired of the drops and sideline tirades, I might have even made a few of those comments myself. So why am I now declaring that Dez Bryant is a must draft player in fantasy football? It’s simple. Value.

According to ESPN.com, Dez Bryant is being drafted as the 51st WR off the board. That’s behind guys like Marquise Lee, Desean Jackson, and Kenny Stills. Not exactly names that are striking fear into the heart of their fantasy opponent. This seems like a good time to remind you that while Dez Bryant suffered one of the worst seasons of his career in 2017, he still turned in 69/838/6 to finish as the #25 WR in standard scoring. If Dez is able to replicate the stats from the worst year of his career, would you be glad that you drafted a quality WR2 with one of the last picks in your draft? I think so. Now just imagine the payoff if he’s able to improve on those numbers!

With the pre-season getting underway, teams are sure to lose players due to injury. There will be other players who fail to impress coaches with their preseason performances. Teams will be looking for ways to bolster their depth at the WR position. Still only 29 years old, a player of Dez Bryant’s pedigree won’t remain unsigned for much longer. Once a team signs the WR, expect his ADP to skyrocket. Can he still be an elite fantasy WR? Opinions vary. But he doesn’t need to be elite to be an extreme value as a 14th round pick. If your league drafts early, Dez Bryant could easily prove to be the steal of your draft.
