Ahead of the 2018 edition of the PGA Championship, here’s a complete list of past winners.

First played in 1916, the same year the PGA of America was founded, the PGA Championship took some time to find its footing as one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments but has now become one of the biggest events in the golf world, even if some may not look at it quite the same way they would at The Masters, U.S. Open or Open Championship.

It started as a match-play event in the early days, with the likes of inaugural champion Jim Barnes and legendary figures Gene Sarazen and Walter Hagen as some of the early winners. Hagen won four consecutive titles from 1924-1927 and five overall, tying him with the great Jack Nicklaus for the most PGA Championship victories. Ben Hogan and Sam Snead were also crowned champion on multiple occasions before the tournament moved to stroke play in 1958.

Since then, the list of PGA Championship winners has included some of the biggest names the sport has ever seen, but also is missing a few. Nicklaus won his five titles. Gary Player won a couple. Lee Trevino hoisted the Wanamaker Trophy two times himself, as did Raymond Floyd. But Arnold Palmer could never get this one. Nor could Seve or Watson or Faldo.

The PGA Championship winners list is also missing some big names from the modern era. While Tiger Woods was able to emerge victorious in this tournament on four occasions, including being the only man to go back-to-back since the move to stroke play (he did it twice), someone like Ernie Els could never break through here. Phil Mickelson did sneak one in back in 2005 and Vijay got one in there as well but that’s the unfortunate timing of playing in the Tiger era. Just ask Sergio Garcia, who challenged Woods as a 19-year-old in 1999 but came up short and has never won the PGA Championship to this point.

As Tiger’s dominance faded , the future of the sport and this championship looks bright as recent winners like Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Justin Thomas have given fans performances to remember for years to come. So let’s take a look back at the past 99 PGA Championship events and get ready for edition number 100 this week at Bellerive Country Club.

Here’s the complete list of winners of the PGA Championship.
