DraftKings Early MLB Picks August 8: Can you use Corbin at home?

The Reds and Mets are getting started early today. So early that they are only available in all day and showdown formats. Unfortunately, that takes deGrom out of an already thin early slate. We still have four early games though, and Coors is on it. Let’s take a look at how to attack this one.

Rain shouldn’t be an issue today, and neither should the wind. However, it is still hot and humid in Arlington, which could help the offense there.

We will provide you with several options to build your lineup here. Want to spend all your money on pitchers and play bargain bats? We will highlight who is worth the money. Want to punt arms and pay up for the big boppers? We can help you with that as well, and everything in between!

These tips are based mostly on past performance. This is a nice tool for building a lineup, but should not be the only pieces of information you use. We have plenty of writers on here who give you relevant information no matter which site you play on!

SEATTLE, WA – JULY 22: Marco Gonzales #32 of the Seattle Mariners warms up in the bullpen prior to taking on the Chicago White Sox during their game at Safeco Field on July 22, 2018 in Seattle, Washington. (Photo by Abbie Parr/Getty Images)

Top Tier:

Patrick Corbin ($11,100): If you have read this column all season long, you will know that Corbin was a hard no anytime he took the mound in Phoenix for much of the season. However, due to some strong outings at home over the last month, Corbin has lowered his home ERA to 3.58. The Phillies are kind of in a rut right now, so I’m liking Corbin more and more here. He has the coveted strikeout upside for use in GPP formats, yet is safe enough for all cash games. It’s really hard to pass on Corbin on this short slate.

Middle Tier:

Marco Gonzales ($8,400): In most cases I wouldn’t consider Gonzales an elite option, but he deserves to be up there today. In his first start against Texas, Gonzales picked up 22.2 DraftKings points. I’m a bit perturbed by the elevated price in a hitter’s park, but as far as the options go on the early slate, Gonzales seems as good as anyone. He should neutralize the Texas lefties, which is where a bulk of their power is from. He may not hit 20 today, but he should come close.

Vince Velasquez ($8,200): Velasquez has a stellar 2.54 ERA in nine road starts. He struggled against Arizona at home, but with his ERA at 4.78 there, it’s reasonable to assume that he could turn in a pretty good outing here. For his price, I think I would rather go with the more sure thing in Marco Gonzales, but Velasquez is a good way to avoid the chalk with solid strikeout upside. Arizona doesn’t strike out a ton, but they do strike out enough to make Velasquez worth a look.

Bargain Pitchers:

Blaine Hardy ($7,200): Where did this guy come from? He has allowed just one run in his last two starts, and one of those was against Cleveland. There is good potential here against an Angels team that likely wont have Trout to worry about. They do have some right handed power, so this is not without risk. However, I’m inclined to go with the hot hand right now, which Hardy clearly has.

Chris Archer ($6,800): Archer has never had to pitch at Coors before, but he has held the current Rockies to a .172 average in 29 at bats with just three runs and 12 strikeouts. The potential is here for Archer to have a strong game, but you never know just how Coors is going to affect someone. This is acceptable risk in GPP’s, but I think I would leave Archer alone in cash games.

Jaime Barria ($6,200): Barria really is nothing special. All of his numbers are average, but that just may be enough against the Tigers. Barria lacks the strikeout upside that we like, but if you are chasing a Coors stack, you may have to go this cheap at pitching. He really is in a good spot against a team that doesn’t hit well. However, the lack of strikeouts means the mid teens are about the best you are going to get out of Barria unless he can pick up the win.

ARLINGTON, TX – AUGUST 07: Nelson Cruz #23 of the Seattle Mariners celebrates a homerun with Kyle Seager #15 against the Texas Rangers in the second inning at Globe Life Park in Arlington on August 7, 2018 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

Seattle Mariners vs. Yovani Gallardo:

Gallardo got thumped by the Orioles of all teams his last time out. So much for the he’s back narrative. At any rate, this could be another bad game for Gallardo. He gave up two homers to the righty heavy Orioles, so load up Nelson Cruz again. Haniger, Segura, and Kyle Seager are all worth a look as well. Ryon Healy has a ton of power as well. If you are attacking this game, its for power potential. Otherwise you would be going with Coors chalk. For what it’s worth, Cameron Maybin has a homer and five RBI against Gallardo, and he is just $3,300.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. German Marquez:

Marquez has been really good on the road, but he still has a 6.63 ERA in 11 home starts. Pittsburgh has power from both sides of the plate here, which is not good for Marquez. His last two home starts have been really good, and this has been a low scoring series so far, but I think someone busts out tonight. Polanco or Corey Dickerson are the likely suspects, but keep an eye on Josh Harrison, Colin Moran, and Starling Marte, and the catcher as well. Diaz and Cervelli are both worth playing if they are in the lineup.

PHOENIX, AZ – AUGUST 06: David Peralta #6 of the Arizona Diamondbacks rounds the bases after hitting the game winning home run in the fourteenth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies at Chase Field on August 6, 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona. Diamondbacks won 3-2. (Photo by Norm Hall/Getty Images)

Top Tier:

I’m not real big on Rangers here, but Choo is 3-5 against Gonzales so far. Odor is still hitting everything, so he could be worth a look even with a lefty on the mound. The price tag is a turn off though.

Charlie Blackmon punishes right handed pitching at home. I doubt Archer is going to pitch a shutout in Coors, so one or two Rockies likely wont hurt, but I wouldn’t go nuts here.

David Peralta is hot enough to use against anyone right now. However, I probably wont go out of my way to cram any of his teammates into my lineup.

I’m not really high on any Phillies right now, but Rhys Hoskins is worth a look with a lefty on the mound. Still, it’s an elite lefty, so don’t aim too high.

Middle Tier:

The Angels did nothing against Blaine Hardy when they faced him in relief, but starting a game is entirely different. You could take a shot with Simmons or Justin Upton here, but there is a pretty good chance that they come up empty. This offense looks a lot different and not in a good way with Trout out of it.

Goodrum and Castellanos are about all the Tigers have left right now. I guess you could take a shot at Jose Iglesias as well, but I don’t see anything that says Barria is in for a bad game or that the Detroit offense is in for a good one. This whole game just looks……average.

Bargain Shoppers:

Alex Avila is the only Diamondback with a homer against Vince Velasquez, and he will only set you back $3,300. Just make sure he is in the lineup since the Diamondbacks like to spin the wheel at catcher.
