The Nets are still getting in position to get in position to eventually be good

Despite the near continuous praise for GM Sean Marks from most corners of the NBA blogosphere, the Nets are going to be bad again this season. Obviously, they’ve been in a really tough spot, having just now emerged from their onerous obligation to the Celtics.

Supporters will point out that Brooklyn has made teams pay them future draft assets to accept their bad contracts. They have a handful of young players (D’Angelo Russell, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Jarrett Allen, Caris LeVert) who appear to be at least useful role players. And in 2019 they will have a healthy amount of cap space. But so will a lot of teams. And there aren’t any players currently on the team that clearly project to ever be All-Stars.

So has Sean Marks and the front office done a good enough job to be routinely complimented?

Perhaps. As admittedly lapsed Nets fan David Roth (@david_j_roth) puts it, they are “still getting in position to get in position” to be competitive again. David is a writer and podcaster for Deadspin and joins the latest episode of Fastbreak Breakfast. Among debating the merits of Brooklyn’s recent transactions, the following disparate subjects are discussed:

  • How many unhealthy habits can a healthy breakfast cover up?
  • Does Overseas Elite have a secret formula for how they have seemingly solved The Basketball Tournament?
  • Is it better for Kevin Durant’s legacy to spend the rest of his career winning on the Warriors or to head to a new franchise after this season?
  • When the president came after LeBron James on Twitter, was he actually close to finding an angle that could have been effective and hilarious?
  • If Twitter existed back then, what would Michael Jordan’s DMs have looked like in his prime?
  • Are Hallmark movies an acquired taste? is it possible to go back once that taste is acquired?
