Fantasy Football Off-Season Overview – Green Bay Packers

Why are the Green Bay Packers such a hard team to write about?

I’m not sure why, I just have a hard time finding words to describe this team. To analyze them.

It shouldn’t be that hard.

They’re led by one of the best quarterbacks of this generation, Aaron Rodgers, who puts up great numbers when his season isn’t ended early with catastrophic injury.

After losing Jordy Nelson, the Packers are holding an open competition for the WR3 spot. Players like Randall Cobb, Davante Adams (the current two starters) and others have risen to prominence from this coveted role with Rodgers. More on this later.

Other than maybe the Patriots, this is the toughest running back situation to break down. Jamaal Williams, Aaron Jones (2 game suspension to start) and Ty Montgomery are all returning, and each has unique qualities in an offense known for passing.

Williams should have the first crack at getting to prove he can be the guy in Green Bay; of course I say this before any preseason games have been played. Continue to monitor this battle closely throughout the preseason.

Green Bay’s big money acquisition this year was Jimmy Graham. Misused in Seattle, Graham is looking to return to the production he became famous for in his New Orleans days. The Packers have been looking for a solid tight end for years.

Aaron to Jimmy seems like a natural fit, and could be a scary combo. Look for Graham to repeat his double-digit touchdown performance from last season, but to add about 30 more catches, and 400 more yards.

I Gotta Get Me One of Those!

There aren’t many quarterbacks I recommend taking in the first few rounds of the draft. Rodgers is one. Having him MATTERS. He’s in that top tier of fantasy quarterbacks that can actually make the difference between winning a championship or not.

It’s not rocket science, it’s not brain surgery, don’t re-invent the wheel … Get Aaron Rodgers.

Buyer Beware

Ty Montgomery is a wide receiver by trade and by number, but a running back in Green Bay. Two years ago, the Packers’ RB depth issues made this necessary. That’s not the case any longer. When Jones gets back, he should push Montgomery back down the running back depth chart. I don’t see him holding much value anymore, unless the Packers incur a ton of injuries.

Stay Woke

The wide receiver battle at 3/4 is going to go all throughout training camp. I expect Geronimo Allison to play a role, but ultimately, I think Equanimeous St. Brown will emerge from the pack of Allison, J’Mon Moore, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Jake Kumerow.

Throughout camp, it’s St. Brown that has been the most consistent, and while Rodgers has gone out of his way to praise former practice squader Kumerow, St. Brown has the best shot right now at playing meaningful snaps when the season starts.

I guess they weren’t that hard to write about after all.
