Here’s a look back at the 10 most memorable moments in the history of the PGA Championship.

2018 marks the 100th playing of the PGA Championship and in the course of the last century, there have been countless moments that have given countless golf fans reason to watch in amazement. So one could imagine how difficult it was to pick the top 10 moments in PGA Championship history.

The PGA Championship may be looked at sometimes as an overlooked major and may not quite have the beauty of The Masters, the difficulty of the U.S. Open or the history of The Open Championship but it’s still one of the four biggest tournaments on the golf calendar and obviously still counts. Jack Nicklaus doesn’t have 18 major championships without five PGA Championship titles, tied for the record for most wins at this tournament with the great Walter Hagen, even if those titles came in different eras and in different formats.

For those unaware, the PGA Championship, which was first played in 1916, was match play until 1958 when it was trying to become a bit more prestigious and attract a wider audience. Networks and sponsors wanted more players in contention on the final day, which is a bit difficult when some get knocked out during a match play format.

This tournament has also jumped around on the golf calendar for a long time. For quite a while, the Grand Slam was impossible as The Open Championship and PGA Championship were played back-to-back (and sometimes even shared days), making it impossible for players to participate in both. It wasn’t until 1965 that it found its place in August but it’s on the move once again as the 2018 edition will be the final time it’s played as the final major championship of the year before it moves to May in 2019, sandwiched between The Masters and U.S. Open, (which also moves The Players Championship back to March) with the hope that the FedExCup Playoffs won’t have to compete with football.

Even with all the controversy and movement and different formats, the PGA Championship has provided great drama over a century and produced some of the greatest champions in golf history. Here’s a look at 10 of the most memorable moments in PGA Championship history.
