Tottenham beat Newcastle 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday, Aug. 11. Here are all the highlights from the match.

Tottenham came in for plenty of criticism on transfer deadline day, when they became the first Premier League team in the history of the summer window not to buy or sell a single player. Mauricio Pochettino responded by rushing back several of his stars who made deep runs at the World Cup, who were able to grind out a 2-1 win against Newcastle.

Tottenham dominated the opening stages, and took the lead in the eighth minute, Jan Vertonghen heading in from close range after Davinson Sanchez flicked on Christian Eriksen’s corner. Martin Dubravka appeared to save the ball, but the goal-line decision system awarded the goal.

Newcastle, whose lack of striking options was one of the themes of their 2017-18, responded almost immediately through Joselu, who found space between the Tottenham center-backs to head Matt Ritchie’s excellent cross past Hugo Lloris. He managed only four goals in all of last season.

Spurs regained control after conceding, however, and the Magpies struggled to get the ball into the feet of their attacking players, with Mohamed Diame particularly sloppy on the ball. Tottenham regained the lead in the 18th minute from another header, this one by Dele Alli, found at the back post by Serge Aurier’s cross.

Newcastle started the second half impressively, as Diame hit the post in the 47th minute, shortly before Kenedy’s touch let him down when he appeared to be through on goal. Given how many of Tottenham’s players had basically no preseason, it was hard not to wonder whether fatigue was beginning to take his toll.

But for a Moussa Sissoko chance in the 56th minute, blocked by a superb reflex save by Dubravka, Mauricio Pochettino’s side struggled to create chances in the second half. Harry Kane, in particular, seemed out of sorts, and his wait for a first ever Premier League goal in August goes on.

The home side almost took the lead through one of their new signings, Salomon Rondon, in the 85th minute, but the Venezuelan was denied by an excellent block from Vertonghen, which deflected the ball onto the bar. That proved to be the last good opening of the match as Spurs held on for the win.

Next. The best player on every team at the World Cup. dark
