By Ty Finch
Manchester City beat Arsenal 2-0 in the Premier League on Sunday, Aug. 12. Here are all the highlights from the match.
The Unai Emery era at Arsenal began with a loss to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. There were positives for the new manager, but above all the match underlined just why this City side are favorites for the league.
Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva were omitted from the starting XI as they get back up to speed following the World Cup, but City’s starting XI was still highly impressive, with new signing Riyad Mahrez, Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva all in the side.
They took a deserved lead in the 14th minute through Raheem Sterling, who had already tested Petr Cech early on. The Englishman collected the ball from a Benjamin Mendy pass, before driving inside and finishing past a flat-footed Cech.
Arsenal seemed like they might crumble after going behind, but recovered after a difficult spell. Hector Bellerin had a decent chance saved by Ederson, while Pierre Emerick Aubameyang missed the target with the Gunners’ other good chance of the half.
They improved after the break, however, and began to force City onto the back foot for the first time all match. Alexandre Lacazette, on as a substitute, went closest, but volleyed just wide from the top of the box.
City got their second shortly after, which put the result to bed. Bernardo Silva got the goal, powering into the top corner after Benjamin Mendy’s cut-back. It was a superb finish by the Portuguese midfielder.
