Fantasy Football Off-Season Overview – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Most of the teams I’ve profiled this summer have made some form of improvements in the off-season. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers aren’t one of those teams.

At least not from a fantasy perspective. Most of their off-season acquisitions were made to improve the defense.

Rookie running back Ronald Jones, expected to compete with Peyton Barber for the starting job has failed to impress so far in camp. Jones struggles with pass protection, and may have a hard time seeing the field much in 2018, much less wrestling the starting spot away from Barber.

Meanwhile, Jameis Winston will miss the first three games of the season with a personal conduct suspension.

Where does that leave Mike Evans? Well, the better question is where has Mike Evans been?

Last year can’t be called anything but a disappointment for Evans. He racked up just 1,001 yards, and scored just five times. One-fifth of the fantasy season without his starting quarterback isn’t the best way to start a bounce-back season.

I Gotta Get Me One of Those!

Even with the regression in 2017, and missing his QB until week 4, Evans is the best thing the Bucs have going. I do think he’ll be a nice receiver, I just don’t see him returning back to the numbers he was putting up in his second and third seasons.

Buyer Beware

This is a pivotal year for Jameis Winston. And he’s not starting it off the way you want to kick off a pivotal year.

Winston started 13 games last year, went 3-10, and threw 19 touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions. Not exactly the numbers you look for in the third season of a number one overall pick.

And now, Winston will miss the first three games. Target wise, Evans is a big body to throw to, but outside of that, there’s not a lot there.

The only proven deep threat is DeSean Jackson, who isn’t the receiver he once was.

I don’t buy Winston as a top 20 fantasy quarterback in 2018.

Stay Woke

Just because I spend the whole last section trashing Jameis Winston doesn’t mean they’re just going to move the football, like, at ALL … They’ll do SOMEthing.

Chris Godwin turned some heads early on last preseason. Godwin turned in a decent rookie campaign with 525 yards, and a score. As DeSean Jackson shows his age more and more, Godwin should get more opportunities in the Bucs’ offense. He might be worth a late round flier.
