MLB DFS Picks – Standouts: August 16th

Tonight’s MLB DFS Picks slate features seven games with, Texas (5.7), Los Angeles (5.4), Minnesota (5.1), and Toronto (5.1) , holding the best projected team totals. Without many high-priced pitchers in play, finding the best matchups will play more of a factor than finding value will. We’ll be aiming to highlight MLB DFS picks from the perspective of batted ball data, batter splits, line movement, and stolen base upside.

MLB DFS Picks: Batted Ball Stats

Jim Adduci – DK $3400, FD $2300

Not only should Jim Adduci be considered tonight given his favorable matchup against a righty, but he’s also been hitting the ball extremely well of late. You may not be able to tell so, looking at his fantasy production, but his recent batted ball stats may indicate that he is due for positive regression. In the last 15 days, his batted ball distance is up 21 feet, his exit velocity is up 2 MPH, and his hard hit percentage is up 7%, over his yearly average.

Batter Splits

Shohei Ohtani – DK $5200, FD $3400

Shohei Ohtani will draw an advantageous matchup tonight, as he faces the righty Ariel Jurado. Ohtani is much better against right-handed pitching, with a .414 wOBA split (.171 better than when facing a lefty) and a .316 ISO split (.246 better than when facing a lefty). Ohtani is a much better play on FanDuel, where he only costs $3400.

Tyler Austin $3800, FD $2300

Tyler Austin will be in an attractive spot tonight, as he’ll take on the lefty, Francisco Liriano. Austin is much better against left-handed pitching, with a .377 wOBA split (.095 better than when facing a righty) and a .299 ISO split (.087 better than when facing a righty).

Line Movement

Clay Buchholz – DK $9500, FD $8600

Arizona will be on the road tonight, as they take on the San Diego Padres. The Diamondbacks opened as -130 favorites, but have since been bet out to -143. While this isn’t any movement out of the ordinary, it may be a good sign for Clay Buchholz, who is in a tremendous spot tonight from a DFS perspective. Not only does San Diego have one of the lowest projected team totals (3.7), but they also have a team strikeout per game rate of 9.38 (4th highest). In addition, they are known to struggle even more so against righties, like Buchholz.

Stolen Base Upside

Whit Merrifield – DK $4000, FD $3600

Whit Merrifield will have a juicy matchup on the base paths tonight, as he faces the righty, Sam Gavigilo. Gavigilo has been susceptible to base stealers, surrendering 11 stolen bases over the course of 83.1 innings pitched. This will give Merrifield additional upside, as he’s stolen 26 bases this year, sixth most in the majors.
