3. A nice blend of rookies and veterans

There has been a lot of hate thrown at the Raiders and Jon Gruden for signing veteran players this offseason. Honestly, that is a very shallow take. Yes, Gruden signed some guys that are on the back-end of their career. But he was strategic with the signings and in the process, improved the team’s locker room and the culture within the franchise.

Every team needs the veteran players to set a standard for the younger guys to follow. Players such as Jordy Nelson, Derrick Johnson, and Tahir Whitehead are all savvy veterans who will help finalize the culture shift in Oakland. Alongside Derek Carr, Khalil Mack, and Bruce Irvin, the Raiders have multiple talented leaders who will help mentor the young guys.

In addition, it is beginning to look like the Raiders found some gems in their draft class. Left tackle Kolton Miller, who people trashed after the draft, looked impressive in his first preseason game. Cornerback Nick Nelson and defensive tackles P.J. Hall and Maurice Hurst also showed flashes of brilliance against the Lions. Yes, it is just the preseason, but this is the time for the rookies to show off their potential.

The team will rely heavily on solid performances from the rookie class as there are multiple holes on the roster. However, as it stands now, it looks as though the team found guys who are ready to produce early and often. With the guidance they will receive from the veterans who have proven they know what it takes to win in the NFL, the Raiders have a good chance at having a very talented roster. If things go as planned with regards to roster balance and locker room morale, the Raiders will be a force to be reckoned with.
