Both Cardiff City and Newcastle United come into their Premier League matchup on August 18 craving their first points of the young season. The Welsh side was mostly dominated by Bournemouth in the season opener, as the Bluebirds completed just 60 percent of their passes and attempted just one shot on goal in a 2-0 defeat.

Neil Warnock helped guide Cardiff to the Premier League after finishing runner-up in the Championship last season. Five years ago, the Bluebirds won the 2012-2013 Championship and promptly finished dead last in the following year’s Premier League.  To avoid a similar fate, Warnock needs his charges to secure points against midtable clubs like Newcastle.

The Magpies acquitted themselves against Tottenham Hotspur in the season opener but earned no points in a 2-1 loss. Joselu responded quickly to Jan Vertonghen’s opener, glancing his own header past keeper Hugo Lloris in the 11th minute. Dele Alli ultimately found the winner in the 18th minute, but Newcastle came close several times to leveling the match once again.

Rafael Benítez could be playing out a lame-duck year at Newcastle United if he fails to negotiate a new contract with Mike Ashley. The manager steered an often-overmatched Newcastle team to 10th in the 2017-2018 Premier League. As the Tottenham match showed, he is getting a strong effort from his squad again this year. But a team without a ton of depth is already suffering injury scares after right back DeAndre Yedlin hobbled off at the end of the opener.

Can Cardiff City pull off a victory on their home pitch, where they were 16-4-3 in the Championship last year? Or will Newcastle shake off a tough loss to Tottenham to claim three points away from St James’ Park? This match is worth waking up to on Saturday morning for fans in the United States.
