Fantasy Football Off-Season Overview – New Orleans Saints

Should Drew Brees have a second Super Bowl title?

Probably.

But, rookie safety Marcus Williams forgets for a second to tackle Stefon Diggs, and at the last possible moment, the Vikings send the Saints home.

Crushing blow to the Saints to end the 2017 season.

What that tells you, though, is that New Orleans isn’t that far off. Which is why they really didn’t do much in the off-season.

Cameron Meredith comes in from Chicago, signing with the Saints in restricted free agency. The Bears chose not to match the offer sheet.  Meredith comes in, and will replace Willie Snead, who left for Baltimore.

Meredith should get some decent production playing alongside Michael Thomas. Coming off a season that saw him rack up nearly 900 yards and four touchdowns, I don’t see necessarily a BREAKOUT season for Meredith, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he eclipsed 1,000 yards in this offense.

How do I choose between Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara for this section?

Mark Ingram is suspended for the first four weeks of the season. That will give plenty of time for Kamara to prove that 2018 wasn’t a fluke.

It wasn’t.

Kamara is a beast, he can do it all. Expect him to be the 5th-7th running back taken, especially in PPR leagues.

Meanwhile, Michael Thomas is trending the complete right way. I’d expect him to have a huge 3rd year, with 1,200-1,300 yards and 8-10 touchdowns.

Buyer Beware

While Alvin Kamara is trending up up up, I’d put Mark Ingram in the down down down column. There IS room for the 29-year-old veteran, but only just.

After week 10 last season, Ingram only had two games where he put up 100 yards from scrimmage, and didn’t score in half the games. I expect the scales to tilt even more in Kamara’s favor this year.

Add in the fact that Ingram is going to miss the first four games of the season, and his value isn’t what it seems to be.

Somebody in your league is going to look at Ingram’s raw numbers from last season and take him way higher than he should go. Don’t let it be you.

Stay Woke

With these Saints and the passing game, you never really do know. All the rules kind of go out the window. I look at those gold helmets and I just think gold. Money. Pay day. Invest. Yes.

Tre’Quan Smith intrigues me. Sean Payton just knows how to use receivers with good speed and get production out of them. I don’t know if Drew Brees will make him the next big thing or not. Probably not. But, when it’s throw a dart time at the end of your draft, Smith’s size and speed make him somebody worth taking late.
