Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez recently took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the current state of the New York Yankees.

When you say that the team with the second best record in baseball (79-46) is struggling, it sounds a little silly. But that’s just how strange of a season it’s been for the New York Yankees in 2018.

They were neck-and-neck with the Boston Red Sox for months, and the two teams were tied for first place in the AL East at the beginning of July. But since then, the Red Sox have unleashed a historic run to pull away from the Yankees, stretching the lead to as many as 10.5 games. Meanwhile, the Yankees have fallen off pace a little bit. The second half of their season has been marred with injuries (most notably, to superstar slugger Aaron Judge) and ineffectiveness.

The differences between the Yankees and Red Sox became glowingly clear when New York was swept by its hated rival in a four-game series at Fenway Park in early August.

The Yankees are still 33 games above .500 and will be in the playoffs this year, but their recent woes have led Pedro Martinez, a Hall of Famer and former legendary Red Sox pitcher, to share his thoughts about them on Twitter. To Pedro, they just don’t look like a winning team right now. More specifically, they have no “hustle.”

Martinez was a member of the historic 2004 Red Sox team that ended Boston’s 86-year World Series drought, and he played a pivotal part in the Red Sox coming back from down three-games-to-none to defeat the Yankees in that year’s American League Championship Series. Therefore, this criticism could be construed as Martinez just being a lifelong Yankee hater.

That isn’t the case though. Pedro is being nothing more than a baseball analyst here, and he’s not wrong. The Yankees have been less than impressive during the second half of the season, mainly among their pitching staff with Luis Severino’s recent struggles and Sonny Gray’s constant ineffectiveness.

However, since getting swept in Boston, the Yankees have gone 12-4, so it will be interesting to see if they can fully get back to their winning ways in time for the postseason.
