Should you consider drafting Cam Newton in your fantasy football league? What does the new offense look like? We discuss.

Cam Newton is a great topic when discussing the NFL’s quarterback tiers. At best, he was the league MVP. At worst, he was a mid-tier quarterback. Many people do not know what to expect from Newton. However, he has consistently been good at one thing: scoring fantasy football points.

The NFL has seen mobile quarterbacks in its history, but none like Newton. He possesses a downhill and powerful run style that is not like former mobile quarterbacks. Michael Vick, Fran Tarkenton, and Steve Young ran with solid speed and stealthiness to avoid getting hit hard by linebackers in the middle of the field. Newton does not shy away from contact. In fact, many times he attempts to break tackles and fall forward like a running back. This paired with a strong arm in the passing game is devastating to opposing defenses.

In 2015, Newton was named the NFL’s MVP after an impressive season that resulted in a Super Bowl appearance for the Carolina Panthers. That season he threw 35 touchdown passes and rushed for an additional 10 scores. There was no reason to believe that he was undeserving of the MVP that he was awarded. However, Newton has had some seasons of struggle.

In 2016, he struggled to find his rhythm, notching a 52.9 pass completion percentage and tossing a mere 19 touchdowns as opposed to 14 interceptions. Last season, he was one interception away from tying his rookie season for the most in his career and threw 22 touchdowns. Newton also tallied his career-best 754 rushing yards. As one can see, despite inconsistencies, there is a lot of reason for optimism for Cam Newton in 2018.
