Fantasy Football Off-Season Overview – San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers have made themselves into a chic pick to make some noise in the NFC.

The buzz in the bay centers around quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who came in last year and won every game he started, after getting traded from New England.

Certainly, backing up Tom Brady has its benefits. Garoppolo played with his hair on fire the last quarter of 2017. And all signs point to him having a strong 2018.

The question is, does Garoppolo have the weapons to launch this offense into a top half of the league stratosphere?

More from FanSided

Marquise Goodwin, a quiet pick to have success this year, joins Pierre Garcon and rookie WR Dante Pettis, who should slide nicely into the third wide receiver role for the team. I think ultimately Garoppolo will be a solid option at quarterback. Not top 7 level like some people are saying, but still solid enough to take late and win with.

One target he’ll have as a security blanket is new running back Jerick McKinnon. While Latavius Murray was the true backup to Dalvin Cook last year, and took over when Cook tore his ACL, it was McKinnon who was the real fantasy value pick. Especially in PPR leagues, but really in any format, McKinnon had HUGE value last year, and has real upside for 2018.

I Gotta Get Me One of Those!

There is going to be a real focus on getting McKinnon the ball this year. We’ve already seen what Kyle Shanahan can do with his offense when he has versatile running backs. McKinnon fits that description. He’ll be paired with Matt Breida, who should get some good production of his own (see below) but the former Viking should get the best fantasy production out of all of Garoppolo’s weapons.

Buyer Beware

When he was in Washington, Pierre Garcon led the league in receptions. Great for him, but that was in 2011. Last year in San Francisco, Garcon only racked up 40 catches for 500 yards. As you get into the middle rounds of your draft, it would be easy to draft Garcon on name recognition. Don’t get caught by that trap.

Stay Woke

Kyle Shanahan had Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman as a tremendous one-two punch out of the backfield in Atlanta. I think he wants to take the same formula and apply it to the 49ers. Matt Breida should be a great sleeper option at running back. At the very least he’s a handcuff to McKinnon. I think he’ll show up as more.
