Bills are apparently willing to start Nathan Peterman

Nathan Peterman has played pretty well this preseason, but starting him if all things are equal is a bad path for the Buffalo Bills.

As expected, leading the team to the playoffs last year was still not enough for the Buffalo Bills to keep Tyrod Taylor around. They signed A.J. McCarron and moved up to draft Josh Allen in April’s draft, and 2017 fifth-round pick Nathan Peterman is still around.

Peterman has been in the background of the competition for the starting job. He was tabbed as a contender at one point, and he has played well in the last two preseason games (24-for-31 for 313 yards and two touchdowns combined).

McCarron appears to have avoided a serious collarbone injury after being injured in the second preseason game, and Allen was removed from Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals to be evaluated for a concussion. Allen spoke to the media after the game, so he appears to be no worse for the wear barring any setbacks.

If Allen or McCarron are in line to miss Week 1, Peterman could find himself thrust into the starting lineup. For their part, prominent as it is of course, the Bills appear to be just fine with the idea of Peterman starting.

Peterman played in four games last year as a rookie. But the first of his two starts was by far the most memorable appearance. He threw five first half interceptions against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 11, when Taylor was inexplicably benched and stepped back in for the second  half of the game.

Peterman would surely only start in Week 1 by default, if Allen and McCarron are out. But somehow sticking with him for all 16 games, or any significant chunk of the season even if Allen and/or McCarron are available, is a path to 3-13 or worse for the Bills this year.
