Does it really matter who is named the starting quarterback for Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide?

On Monday, Nick Saban and the Alabama Football team released its first official depth chart, with Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa listed as co-starters at quarterback. Throughout the spring, Hurts and Tagovailoa have battled for the starting position, but it looks as if the competition will spill into the season.

Hurts, a junior, has compiled a 26-2 record as the starting quarterback over the past two seasons, while earning a reputation as one of the better players at his position in college football, but was benched in the second half of the National Championship Game, which led to the Tagovailoa coming out party.

Tagovailoa, a sophomore, has yet to start a college football game but impressed in the second half of the National Championship Game by leading the Crimson Tide to a comeback victory over the Georgia Bulldogs with the game-winning touchdown pass in overtime.

Alabama released their depth chart for the season opener against Louisville and Tagovailoa and Hurts were listed as co-starters. More gamesmanship from Saban who doesn’t want to tip off the opponent to his plans. Whether Hurts or Tagovailoa take over the starting spot for the rest of the season is a question many want the answer to, but in reality, does it really matter?

Alabama can likely win the SEC and get to the Playoff with one or the other starting, or with both sharing the duties in a platoon.

That being said, if there is one position in football where teams need stability, and that is at quarterback. Not to say the Crimson Tide could not run through the SEC with a two-quarterback system, but eventually, for the sake of the team, Saban will need to commit to Hurts or Tagovailoa.

If I were a betting man, I’d say Tagovailoa will be settled in as the teams starting quarterback by the start of the conference slate, but for now, expect to see both Hurts and Tagovailoa on the field Saturday when Alabama takes on Louisville in Orlando, Florida.
