Chad Johnson – Sporting KC/Napoli

The man formerly known as “Ochocinco” made himself famous with a standout career as an NFL wide receiver, primarily with the Cincinnati Bengals. During his football career, Johnson was a six-time Pro Bowler and three time All-Pro. He also led the NFL in receiving yards in 2006. He was one of the bigger stars of the NFL in the last decade, but that may have more to do with his antics and personality than his play on the field.

Johnson was notorious for his outspoken demeanor and unshakable confidence, as well as for his elaborate and outlandish touchdown celebrations. Johnson celebrated touchdowns over his career by donning a Pro Football Hall of Fame jacket, riverdancing, and even a fake proposal to a Bengals cheerleader.

Now that his career is over, Johnson’s interests have shifted to a different brand of football. His first true interaction with soccer came in 2011. The NFL was in the midst of a summer lockout, and Johnson expressed a desire to play professional soccer. He began a trial with Sporting Kansas City of MLS. Johnson’s trial didn’t end up with him becoming a member of the team, and the NFL eventually resolved their labor dispute, giving him his day job back. SKC made Johnson an “honorary member” of their team and allowed him to train with them in order to maintain fitness ahead of the upcoming football season.

These days, Johnson’s relationship with soccer is best defined by his love of the FIFA video game series. He streams himself playing it and other games on his Twitch channel, and often challenges his Twitter followers to beat him in the game. Johnson makes house calls to play his fans, and uses Serie A club Napoli faithfully every game.
