The Red Sox have their sights set on making a postseason run. If they lose David Price to injury, it’s going to put a big dent in those hopes.

No World Series contender wants to suffer a key injury at this point in the season. Unfortunately for the Red Sox, the immediate status of David Price is very much up in the air.

The talented left hander was forced to leave Wednesday’s start against the Marlins after taking a line shot off his left wrist. Price recovered from the blow to retire Austin Dean for the final out of the third inning, but he wasn’t able to come back out and begin the fourth.

The team is calling the injury a wrist “contusion” currently, but they do admit he’ll need to undergo further evaluation. It will likely take a few more days to determine exactly much recovery will be required.

The only good news is that Eduardo Rodriguez is set to come off the disabled list for the team this week. He’s slated to return to the starting rotation on Saturday. That means that even if Price is forced to miss starts, the team won’t be down multiple starters at the same time.

Price’s absence would likely equal the return of Drew Pomeranz to the rotation.

Fortunately, Boston currently enjoys a 6.5 game lead in the AL East. That means it should be relatively easy for the club to survive Price missing several starts. The only meaningful thing for the Red Sox is to get Price back to 100 percent before October arrives.

Next. Alex Cora isn't thinking about the playoffs. dark

Nonetheless, everyone associated with the Red Sox will be on pins and needles waiting to hear Price’s final diagnosis. The team can afford a short trip to the disabled list for their southpaw, but if his absence extends into October it could dash the team’s hopes for a World Series title.
