The Euroleague’s 50 best players: 20-11
16. Chris Singleton, C, Barcelona
Nationality/College: American (Florida St)
2017-18 stats: 9.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists per game (Panathinaikos)
Career synopsis: Drafted 18th in the 2011 NBA Draft, Singleton started his career as a part of the infamous Nick Young/JaVale McGee era Washington Wizards. He spent three years with Washington, and then one year splitting time between China and the Oklahoma City Blue in the G-League. Once he signed with Lokomotiv Kuban in Russia in 2015, his European career instantly took off. He helped Kuban make the Final Four in 2016, and then turned that into a big contract with Panathinaikos. He now hopes to help turn Barcelona around after two years in Greece.
Representative Highlight Play:
What’s his skill set?: Singleton combines one of the league’s more versatile offensive skill sets with a decent rim protection ability. He is a solid pick-and-pop option, able to face up and drive to the rim, and he’s excelled as a lob option at Panathinaikos. Defensively, he’s not always the most engaged player, but he can provide good value as a weakside rim protector.
What makes him special?: Singleton’s move to Barcelona is very interesting because in theory, his fit is much better than he had in Athens. With Hanga and Kevin Seraphin next to him, he won’t be relied on as much as a rim protector, and his new pick-and-roll partner, Kevin Pangos, provides a shooting threat he hasn’t had before. This marriage could be mutually beneficial — the Barcelona roster may play closer to Singleton’s strengths, and his strengths will provide the game-changing punch that Barca hasn’t had in the past couple of seasons.
