MLB Fantasy Baseball: Hot Waiver Wire Options for you to Pick Up

Hey all you MLB Fantasy Baseball season longers. Is that a word? Maybe! Are you still alive in your league? MLB Fantasy Waiver Wire Options is here to help you out if you are! We are just one short day away from September call-ups. Also, today is the last day for waivers to be cleared to be made available to trade.

There have already been a few post-trade deadline trades and probably more to come. Playoff teams are looking for that player to put them over the top. We saw Daniel Murphy get moved to the Cubs. We could see other big names on the move by the end of the night, such as Josh Donaldson or Andrew McCutchen.

For those of you that are new to MLB Fantasy “Waiver Wire Options” posts, take a look below to see how it works!

  • Regarding league-wide ownership, you will be provided the website(s) that applies to the player listed (i.e. Byron Buxton is 33.7% owned on ESPN and 56% owned on Yahoo!).
  • Stat line if it applies. A rookie being called up to the bigs for the first time may not have a line yet.  In this scenario, you’ll find a description of their minor league stats.
  • Long-term or short-term help.  Some players listed may only help in short-term.  Others may fill long-term needs.

  • Advanced statistics to help determine potential success
  • Let’s get this show on the road!

    P Ryan Yarbrough Rays (ESPN 11% – Yahoo! %)

Yarbrough would be an interesting add. The Rays pitching staff has been one to watch this season. They are taking the innovative yet questionable approach starting the game with a reliever for an inning or two. Then they bring in a “starter” or long reliever.

It has not been a successful approach all season, however Yarbrough has shown upside as of late. He has a 12-5 record and had a really solid last four appearances. He is not a hard thrower by any means, but relies on a 4-seamer and cutter that catches a lot of hitters looking. If you need a guy that eats innings, Yarbrough could be your guy. He won’t get you a ton of strikeouts, but the ERA and WHIP are improving.

    P Framber Valdez Astros (ESPN 6.2% – Yahoo! 8%)

Even if Valdez hadn’t been pitching that well, he would still be a viable option pitching for one of the top offensive teams in baseball. He progressed through the Astros farm system quickly since 2015. He has only pitched in two games, but is 2-0 with a 1.60 BABIP. In those two games, Valdez has only given up one earned run.

    P Trevor Hildenberger Twins (ESPN 11.7% – Yahoo! 24%)

Hildenberger has been given the opportunity to pitch in the 9th inning for the Twins. Previously he was being utilized as a short reliever with 17 holds. Now he has five saves. The K/9 is slightly down this season at 8.34. He relies on downward moving pitches. In the month of August, he used the sinker 41.88% of the time.

    P Jesse Chavez Cubs (ESPN 3.7% – Yahoo! 5%)

Joe Madden has been getting a lot of usage out of Chavez since being brought in from Texas. He has become one of the more reliable long and short relievers for the Cubs. He has proven that he can pitch multiple innings. Plus, he is being used in high leverage situations. Joe Madden and pitching coach Jim Hickey trust Chavez, and it makes sense. His 24.5 K% is the best of his career and has a 3.45 xFIP, which ranks above average.

OF Alex Gordon Royals (ESPN 2.2% – Yahoo! 2%)

Remember when Alex Gordon was a must own in fantasy? Part of that had to do with the success of the Royals franchise. He’s really struggled in the past few seasons in most stat categories.

If you can look past some of those struggles, you can try looking at the bright side. He is still a double-digit home run and steals guy. He has 10 home runs and eight stolen bases right now, and he’s been hot lately. Gordon is still an everyday player and has hits in nine out of his last eleven games. He is still a threat at the plate, and could help a fantasy team in hits, runs, and stolen bases, with the occasional long ball.

INF Luis Urias Padres (ESPN 8% – Yahoo! 14%)

According to MLB.com, Urias is the #1 2nd base prospect. In AAA this year, he has a .296 average with eight home runs and 45 RBIs. It is too early to really get an idea of what he will be worth to fantasy owners, but he plays the important middle infield position. In 120 games in AAA, he had a .380 wOBA and a 127 wRC+. On top of that he was slugging .447. Look for him to use his advanced pitch recognition to continue hitting big league pitchers.

OF Matt Holliday Rockies (ESPN 0.8% – Yahoo! 1%)

What a great story here. Holliday has gone full circle, being drafted by the Rockies in ’04. Then he moved on to the A’s for a hot second before spending seven full seasons in St. Louis. He called New York home for one season with the Yankees until now. Nostalgia. Holliday is back with the team that drafted him.
