To say that the Clemson Tigers have become a powerhouse under head coach Dabo Swinney would be to put the situation mildly. They have clearly become one of the most successful programs in college football in recent memory, having had three-straight berths in the College Football Playoff. On Saturday at home in Memorial Stadium, they start their road to a fourth-straight as they take on the Furman Paladins.
Swinney actually made a somewhat shocking decision regarding this 2018 Clemson team entering the opener. This week, he named Kelly Bryant, who was their starting quarterback last season, the starter for this year as well. However, with star freshman Trevor Lawrence making waves, many thought he may be the better option. Regardless of who’s at quarterback though, this is a team with one of the best defenses in the country as the group is led by Dexter Lawrence, Christian Wilkins, Clelin Ferrell and several others.
Unfortunately, Furman can’t really match that level of talent. Quarterback Harris Roberts will clearly need to play the game of his life for any kind of upset to even come close to happening. We shall see if he and the Paladins have any magic up their sleeves to start the season though.

There’s no way to get around the fact that Clemson should dominate this game. On both sides of the ball at every level, they are superior to Furman in this matchup. Thus, don’t expect to see anything close to an upset on Saturday. Even still, there are plenty of storylines early in the season to watch for as it pertains to the highly-touted Tigers.
