Is it basketball season yet? That’s what Kansas fans are asking after their team lost to Nicholls State, both in overtime and in their wallets.

$450,000. That’s how much the Kansas Jayhawks paid the Nicholls State Colonels to play a home game in Lawerence, hoping to have an easy victory against an FCS opponent to kick off the 2018 season with a win.

Only, it didn’t turn out like that.

Instead, Kansas found themselves in a fight against the FCS team, and the Jayhawks went on to lose — yes, lose — in overtime.

I think Darren Rovell’s tweet summed up what we all thought:

Here’s a question from Jayhawk fans: Is it basketball season yet?

That’s what many are asking after witnessing their football team, which doesn’t nearly have the same winning pedigree as their hoops squad, absorb what has to be the most embarrassing loss of Week 1.

Sure, Appalachian State nearly went into Happy Valley and nearly stunned Penn State today; but these types of upsets are now expected from the North Carolina mountain college. No one, and we mean no one, would have thought that Nicholls State, a school that many can’t even find on Google Maps if they typed it in search, would go into Lawrence and take out a Division 1 team.

Then again, that’s the beauty of college football.

Week 1 games are usually dullsville, with big-time squads scheduling cupcakes to tune up for their tougher conference schedule. Every once in a while, we have a Nicholls State, coming in and screwing up everyone’s predictions.

Oklahoma is going to be alright. dark. Next

Expect, Kansas paid $450,000 for this embarrassment. That, my friends, is the very definition of a loser. Right now, Kansas is probably asking for a refund, which they surely won’t receive. So, the next best option, right now, is to cancel the rest of football season and skip straight to basketball where Bill Self and the Jayhawks won’t disappoint anyone until the NCAA Tournament.
