The Kansas Jayhawks are not a college football powerhouse, but things can’t get much worse.

A coach with three wins over three seasons would surely be unemployed in short order, but Kansas Jayhawks coach David Beaty survived. A search and for hiring of a new athletic director probably helped, and it’s not like hopes are high for football at Kansas anyway. So Beaty got to at least start a fourth season as head coach.

The Jayhawks played host to Nicholls State out of the FCS on Saturday, and lost 26-23 in overtime. That makes 12 straight losses dating back to last year, since a 2017 season-opening win over SE Missouri State, and gives Beaty a 3-34 record now.

A 12-1 2007 campaign, capped by an Orange Bowl appearance under coach Mark Mangino, feels like a lifetime ago when considering the fortunes of Kansas football. Turner Gill followed Mangino, with a 5-19 record over two seasons, and Charlie Weis’ tenure was even worse as practical matter if not by record (6-22 over two-plus seasons).

College Football Talk laid out the ineptitude rather nicely, dating back to the start of Gill’s tenure in 2010.

-Kansas has won 15 games combined since the beginning of the 2010 season.
-Kansas has won three games combined since the beginning of the 2015 season
-Kansas’ only win in its last 14 games came against FCS Southeast Missouri State in 2017.
-Kansas’ last win against an FBS team came against Texas in Nov. of 2016.
-Kansas has won nine games combined since the beginning of the 2010 season if you take away wins vs. FCS teams.
-Kansas has lost three games to FCS teams since the beginning of the 2010 season.
-Kansas has two seasons in its last eight in which its only win came against an FCS team (2012, 2017).

The only thing that could be worse is to finish this season winless, just as the Jayhawks did in Beaty’s first season. One point of solace on that front is Texas is on the home schedule for the regular season finale on Nov. 23, and they are the last FBS team Kansas beat. But don’t count on Beaty coaching that game.
