Paxton Lynch looks like a draft bust, but NFL teams are not ready to give up on whatever potential he may have.

Paxton Lynch became a first-round pick on the strength of a strong 2015 junior season at Memphis, and the Denver Broncos traded up to get him with the 26th overall pick. But he couldn’t beat out Trevor Siemian for the starting job in 2016 or 2017, and he was surpassed on the depth chart by Chad Kelly this preseason.

Lynch was waived by the Broncos on Sunday, and went unclaimed as team’s didn’t want to assume the rest of his rookie contract. But now he’s freely available, and Nick Jhabvala of The Athletic reported Monday that four teams called about giving Lynch a workout.

Mike Klis of 9 News in Denver reported Lynch’s visits would start on Tuesday, and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network offered the first report regarding one of the aforementioned four teams.

The Buffalo Bills are an odd, if not interesting, potential landing spot for Lynch after they moved up to take Josh Allen in this year’s draft. But they do have an opening for a third quarterback after trading A.J. McCarron, and Lynch could be cultivated as a fallback option if Allen doesn’t develop.

The Dallas Cowboys notably wanted Lynch in the 2016 draft, and Jerry Jones lamented being usurped by the Broncos. Good fortune smiled on them with Dak Prescott later in that draft, but it would be easy to put Dallas on the list of teams with interest in Lynch now. However, Jones has dismissed the need for a backup quarterback at this point.

The dearth of good quarterbacks around the league consistently gives any semblance of potential a second chance. Lynch’s career sample is small enough (five games-four starts) that he still represents some level of untapped potential, with size (6-foot-7, 244 pounds) and physical tools NFL teams will think they can develop into something until further notice.
