He was never going to play in Week 1, but Carson Wentz is unlikely to miss the “several weeks” it was reported he might.

Despite head coach Doug Pederson’s inexplicable testiness on the topic, there was never any real question Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles would start Week 1 for the Philadelphia Eagles. Carson Wentz is of course working his way back from a torn ACL, and a pessimistic report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport suggesting he will miss “several more weeks” came before last Thursday night’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Caution should be the word with Wentz, just shy of 10 months since he suffered a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee. On that note he still hasn’t been cleared for contact, and Foles seems sure to make at least one more start in Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But the idea Wentz will be sidelined a lot longer than that is fading.

According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen Wentz has not yet been ruled for Week 2, but Week 3 looks more realistic for his possible return to action.

After hitting the road to play Tampa Bay next week, the Eagles will return home to play the Indianapolis Colts in Week 3. That would be a soft landing for Wentz to return and shake off any rust, then possibly be at full capacity in Week 4 against Tennessee Titans before the Minnesota Vikings come to town for an NFC Championship Game rematch in Week 5.

Barring any setbacks, Wentz should be back starting under center for the Eagles before the end of the month. A favorable-looking next couple games allows for a lack of critical urgency or pressure to return, but Foles turning back into who he has been for most of his career in the season opener definitely has Eagles’ fans pining for Wentz to return as soon as possible.
