The battle for the AFC West will start in earnest right away in Week 1, as the Chiefs take on the Chargers.

The Kansas City Chiefs (10-6) and Los Angeles Chargers (9-7) had nearly identical records in 2017, but took slightly different paths to get there.

The Chiefs started 5-0, then lost six of their next seven before finishing on a four-game winning streak. The Chargers started slowly, as they typically do, with an 0-4 mark and they were 3-6 before winning six of their last seven to fall just short of making the playoffs.

The Chiefs moved up to draft Patrick Mahomes last year, and it was clear he would succeed Alex Smith sooner rather than later. A promising Week 17 start was enough to push the Chiefs to trade Smith to the Washington Redskins, and the Mahomes era will start on Sunday.

This game will be in the late window Eastern time. Here’s how you can watch Chiefs-Chargers, and find specific coverage for each team on our FanSided network.

Mahomes probably can’t ask for an easier road environment for his debut as Kansas City’s anointed starter, in a soccer stadium where Chiefs fans may travel as other opposing team fans have since the Chargers started playing there. A tough Chargers pass rush will get after him though, and make it tough on essentially a rookie quarterback in his first high pressure outing.
