Rain meant no practice or qualifying for the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis. See who’s where on the starting grid for the NASCAR regular season finale.
There hasn’t been a NASCAR Cup Series race with no practice or qualifying for at least 15 years. There will be Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as the Big Machine Vodka 400 at the Brickyard, known better as simply the Brickyard 400, gets set to roll off under exactly those circumstances.
Rain in Indianapolis washed out all on-track activities on Friday and Saturday, meaning the field for the regular season finale will be set by points. That puts this year’s two winningest drivers, Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick, right beside each other in Row 1.
The other member of this year’s Big 3, Martin Truex Jr., should be right behind them. Emphasis on ‘should,’ as both he and Daniel Suarez, who desperately needs to win the race to make the NASCAR Playoffs, will have to start from the rear for failing pre-race inspection multiple times.
In fact, qualifying for this race getting rained out couldn’t have come at a worse time for anyone hoping to race their way into the playoff field, since they’ll have to pass all the cars already locked in to pull off a last ditch victory. It’s good news for drivers on the bubble, though, including Hendrick Motorsports teammates Alex Bowman and Jimmie Johnson, whose odds of making it on points just got that much better.
Coverage of the Brickyard 400 is set to begin at an earlier start time than originally announced, at 1:00 p.m. ET on NBCSN, with the green flag expected around 1:06 p.m.
