Power ranking the 10 best Group of Five teams entering Week 3.

Preseason rankings, while not totally necessary, are a fun and interesting way to gauge the upcoming college football season. But I think voters for all polls should be willing to let go of preseason expectations adjust their rankings quickly based on what happens once the games start.

For Week 1, much of the power rankings were based on how teams looked coming into the season. With another week of action, more of my opinion is shaped by how teams have performed in 2018. A few unheralded teams moved into the top 10 with quality wins to start the season.

Florida Atlantic and San Diego State dropped out of the rankings this week despite winning in Week 2. The reason for this is both teams lost in Week 1 and didn’t bounce back impressively enough against lesser opponents to overcome their loss.

Arkansas State and Memphis dropped out of the rankings due to losses. Memphis lost a close matchup to Navy. ASU’s was somewhat understandable against an Alabama team that only 10-15 teams in the country can match up with. But the Red Wolves were not competitive enough in a 57-7 loss.

Overall, it’s not about what the teams off the list didn’t do, as much as it is about what the teams on the list have done so far.
