The 2018 college football season is about to heat up in a major way, and these teams should be on upset alert heading into Week 3.

We’ve already blown through two weeks of the 2018 college football season and now everyone should be begging for the year to slow down. Before any of us realize it, the entirety of the season is going to be gone and it’ll feel like just yesterday that we were watching Penn State almost lose to the Appalachian State Mountaineers. Since we can’t slow time, however, we should at least enjoy all that Week 3 of the season has to offer.

Having said that, this is the time of year where things can get shuffled a bit due to the weather. With Hurricane Florence coming in and about to make a direct hit on the East Coast in the North and South Carolina and Virginia area, the college football games in those areas have all been either cancelled, postponed or moved this weekend. For those interested in the big names, that’s taken matchups for the UCF Knights, West Virginia Mountaineers and Virginia Tech Hokies off the slate.

Of course, we can’t complain about that. The safety of everyone on those teams and the fans heading to the game is the more important part of all of this. If that means a game can’t be played, so be it. And let’s be honest, there are still numerous games full of intrigue that will still take place in the third week of the 2018 season.

Part of that intrigue surrounding this week is that there are some juicy potential upsets brewing throughout the country. Be it because of the start of conference play for some teams, because of big non-conference matchups or just because some teams aren’t playing well, some high-profile college football teams need to be ready. Specifically, these five teams should be on upset alert in Week 3.

5. Miami Hurricanes

Rank: 21 | Opponent: Toledo Rockets | Start Time: Noon ET

There were few showings in the first week of the 2018 college football season that were as disappointing as that of the Miami Hurricanes. With all of the hype you could hope for surrounding them and their chances to win the ACC and even potentially make it into the College Football Playoff, they Hurricanes and their Turnover Chain came out as flat as you could imagine. The end result was getting stomped by LSU, 33-17.

Obviously that left a bad taste in the mouth of Miami and they took that out on lowly Savannah State last week. In a record-breaking performance, the Hurricanes put up 77 points on their Week 2 opponents and didn’t concede one for the entire 60 minutes. It may not have answered any questions about the Hurricanes considering the quality of the opponent, but it at least showed that they weren’t about to roll over.

However, they could have a sneaky test this week as they go to play their first true road game of the 2018 season, taking on the Toledo Rockets. This Toledo team, as you’d expect, can’t match the talent and athleticism of Miami. However, they do have an explosive offense that can put points up on any team in the country.

That offense is going to be a factor in this game, but perhaps even more so is playing in the Glass Bowl in Toledo. This is a notoriously tough place to play given the conditions of the facilities and Miami surely isn’t accustomed to it. When you put that up beside an offense that can put points up, things could get tricky for the Canes.
