David Wright was Amazin’, and will always be a Mets legend
An emotional David Wright announced that he will return for the Mets final homestand, essentially saying Sept. 29th will be the final game of his career.
When the Mets announced that David Wright would talk with the media regarding his timeline for the rest of the season, many assumed the worst, that Wright’s career would be over. The man has been battling injuries that have kept him sidelined since May 27th, 2016. It would be no shock to anybody if he was unable to play. However, the man who was once nicknamed Captain America, will be channeling his inner superhero and playing on September 29th.
It is assumed that will be the last day he will play in the MLB. He doesn’t expect anymore improvement in his physical condition, which will leave him in a state where he cannot contribute to the Mets.
His return to Citi Field and final game is becoming much anticipated among Mets fans. Before the announcement, the cheapest tickets for the Mets game against the Marlins on the 29th were $6. Currently, the cheapest ticket is $44. That is because Mets fans are here to give David Wright the ultimate sendoff, one he absolutely deserves.
The numbers speak for themselves. Never has Wright played for another team and he has literally given the Mets everything he had everyday he was able to take the field. He easily leads the Mets all-time in a multitude of categories and has the highest WAR for any position player the Mets have ever had. He’s a 7-time All-Star who has always been an RBI machine.
However, it goes beyond just the numbers. It is more than that, David Wright means so much to this organization and the Mets mean so much to him. That showed as he made his statement earlier this afternoon.
It really comes down to how much Wright gave to this organization and the fact that he was able to stay in New York his entire career. Mets fans are used to trading away their talent or signing free agents, but Wright did it the old fashioned way. He came up with the Mets and never left. He did that despite only being able to go to the World Series.
It is a shame that the Mets were only able to make the playoffs twice with Wright, he deserved better than that. He helped power them into the NLCS in 2006 then suffered with the rest of the Mets fans during their collapse of 2007. Then, he stayed with the Mets through their struggles during the best years of his career. All of that, in anticipation of 2015’s return to the playoffs, which of course was also ruined by injures.
He missed the majority of 2015 with the same spinal stenosis injury that bugs him right now. It ensured that he was unable to play everyday during the playoffs so that he could rest his back and was why he had to get to the ballpark extra early so he could warm up properly. Yet he did so without a complaint. All he wanted to do was get back on the field and do everything he could do to help his Mets win. He did just that.
In his first game back from the DL, he hit a home run in his first at bat against the Phillies. However, that was nothing compared to his home run in the 2015 World Series. Mets fans had been waiting for a big offensive performance from the team. It was just poetic that their captain, who they had missed for so much of the season, got the party started with a huge home run.
It is so sad to not see David Wright go out on his terms. He truly deserves it and the fact that this injury is forcing him out of baseball is sad. Whether or not someone is a fan of the Mets, they have to appreciate David Wright. He became Captain America when he did everything he could to help Team USA win the 2013 World Baseball Classic. He is one of the most genuine caring and kind people the game of baseball has seen. The world of baseball respects David Wright and deservedly so.

Now, as one of the greats leaves the game, he deserves a massive sendoff. On the September 29th, Citi Field better be packed to the brim and explode with energy anytime Wright does something. The Captain deserves it.
