DraftKings Early MLB Picks September 13: Build around Freeland

We only have two games in our early DraftKings tournament which makes the pickings very slim. Coors is on this slate, and there is a ton of bad pitching besides that which is quite an achievement considering there is only two games. Who will hurt us the least? Let’s see who can help us cash.

It looks like the weather will let these games play, which is nice considering the mess in New York yesterday. There is a 14mph wind in from right in Washington that could knock a few balls down though.

We will provide you with several options to build your lineup here. Want to spend all your money on pitchers and play bargain bats? We will highlight who is worth the money. Want to punt arms and pay up for the big boppers? We can help you with that as well, and everything in between!

These tips are based mostly on past performance. This is a nice tool for building a lineup, but should not be the only pieces of information you use. We have plenty of writers on here who give you relevant information no matter which site you play on!

PHOENIX, AZ – AUGUST 22: Starting pitcher Clay Buchholz #32 of the Arizona Diamondbacks throws a warm up pitch during the MLB game against the Los Angeles Angels at Chase Field on August 22, 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona. Top Tier:

Kyle Freeland ($8,500): Freeland has a superb 2.21 ERA in 13 home starts. It’s safe to say that he can handle Coors Field. Could there really be a pitcher’s duel at Coors? It’s possible with the way Buchholz is pitching this year. I think I prefer Freeland due to his strikeout totals being a little higher, but I’m not opposed to using both. The other two pitchers seem far more volatile.

Clay Buchholz ($8,300): Buchholz has never pitched at Coors Field. This is probably a good time for him to start considering he is having arguably his best season in the majors. Buchholz has a 1.73 ERA in ten road starts. That could be tested here, but having Buchholz at this big of a discount is something to take note of. His strikeout totals aren’t enormous, but I don’t see him getting beat up either. There is solid potential here.

Middle Tier:

Mike Montgomery ($6,800): The current Nationals only have seven career at bats against Montgomery and haven’t driven in a run off of him. That isn’t much to go on. Montgomery’s road ERA is a full run lower than at home, so that’s promising if you feel like using him. There isn’t much to write home about here, but if you are stacking Coors bats on either side, you’ll need the salary relief.

Bargain Pitchers:

Joe Ross ($5,400): Ross looked really good in the 1.2 innings he got in before the game was rained out last week against the Cubs. He will get a crack at the same Cubs team that he handled for five out. The Nationals likely wont less Ross go more than five innings, if that. He is just off recovery from Tommy John Surgery, and they don’t want to push him. However, he hit 97 with his fastball last week. There is decent potential here even though he wont go deep into the game.

DENVER, CO – SEPTEMBER 11: Nolan Arenado #28 of the Colorado Rockies scores on a Trevor Story double in the first inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Coors Field on September 11, 2018 in Denver, Colorado. (Photo by Matthew Stockman/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

Trevor Story and Carlos Gonzalez have both homered off of Clay Buchholz before. It may as well have been in an alternate universe with the way Buchholz is pitching this year. However, with the way Story is hitting, I have no reservations about throwing him or Blackmon out there.

Sense would say that if you are going after Joe Ross, you want to do it with guy that can catch up to the fastball. Javier Baez and Rizzo jump to the front of the line here with Bryant not far off.

Middle Tier:

Ketel Marte is the only Arizona player to homer off of Freeland so far. Steven Souza is 4-6, and is priced reasonably. I don’t know that I really want much on this side either. It seems prudent to attack the lesser pitchers more even if they aren’t in a hitter haven.

I kinda like Trea Turner against Montgomery. Rendon looks pretty appetizing too. Juan Soto hits lefties well enough to go after him as well. Actually, this whole team hits lefties well enough to throw a stack out there if you want.

Bargain Shoppers:

There isn’t much at bargain price today, but Matt Wieters stands out more than most if he starts. Wilmer Difo at just $3,500 looks good too.
