Young prospect Jaime Mungia hammered Brandon Cook to continue his rise.

Up-and-coming star Jaime Munguia dismantled Brandon Cook and earned a third-round TKO.  The stout 21-year-old light middleweight showed why he secured a spot on the undercard of Canelo-GGG 2, bullying the 32-year-old Cook around the ring.

Mungia is coming off a TKO victory of Liam Smith this past July. Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, he overpowered Cook with a barrage of unanswered hooks, forcing the referee to halt the bout. Alternatively, Munguia often crowded himself and looked overzealous when engaging.  Often it would’ve served him better to back out and use his reach. That said, his pacing was good, and he didn’t seem phased to be on what has been so far the biggest card for boxing so far.

Round 1

The naturally bigger Munguia imposed his size immediately, while Cook tried his best to establish his offense. Cook covered and moved in and when Munguia came forward, looking for openings inside. However, Munguia would force him back and hammer him in the corner.

Round 2

The Canadian quickly learned he didn’t want to be on the end of six-foot light middleweight’s punches and tried to smother him right outof  the gate. Cook ended up with gloves covering his face and cowering at the end of the second trying to make it to the bell. Munguia would uncork wild but thunderous punches to the body and head.

Round 3

Cook tried again to get on the inside, rushing the imposing Mexican fighter and attacking the body. Munguia continued slugging, landing a shot to the forehead and knocking Cook down. Cook valiantly stood up for the count but Munguia smelled blood. The young fighter pounced and unleashed a Deontay Wilder-like flurry to close the bout. Tony Weeks wrapped up Cook, ending a courageous fight for the man who picked up the fight on close to four weeks notice.
