Hoffenheim failed to make it into the Champions League proper last season after being convincingly beaten in the qualifying round by Liverpool, although they certainly weren’t the only team to suffer such a fate. In what was Hoffenheim’s first ever taste of European football, Julian Nagelsmann’s side then proceeded to finish bottom of their Europa League group, winning just one game in the process. Nonetheless, their performances often deserved better, and Hoffenheim could feasibly have topped the group with better luck and finishing. Nagelsmann has shown himself to be a very fast learner, so a spate of injuries in midfield is likely to be of much more concern to him than the club’s lack of European pedigree.
Shakhtar will again play their home games in Kharkiv, 150 miles from their true home in Donestsk, due to the continuing Russian military intervention in eastern Ukraine. The team’s ongoing exile doesn’t seem to be harming their performance levels, at least, with Shakhtar sitting top of the Ukrainian Premier League eight games into the season. Their squad contains the customary mixture of Brazilians – ten in all in the current squad – and Ukrainian players. While none of those South Americans is yet as well known as Willian, Fernandinho and Douglas Costa were before moving from Shakhtar to bigger teams, this is the stage upon which reputations can be made.
