The Virginia Tech Hokies come off of a game cancellation and aim to get back in rhythm as they take on the Old Dominion Monarchs on Saturday.

We haven’t seen the Virginia Tech Hokies on a football field in two weeks after Hurricane Florence caused their matchup against ECU to be called off. This early in the season for the 13th-ranked team in the country, that might be an unwelcome break in their rhythm. Lucky for them, the Hokies have a chance to get back at it on Saturday by taking on the Old Dominion Monarchs.

In their first two games, the Hokies have been quite impressive — but it’s worth noting that their one signature win continues to look worse by the week. Head coach Justin Fuente’s team went out in Week 1 and handled Florida State in primetime. However, we’ve since seen that the Seminoles might be a complete mess right now, so how much stock should we put in a win over them?

Even still, there is reason to be impressed by what Virginia Tech has to offer. Quarterback Josh Jackson seems to have picked up from where he was last season, only better. While playing essentially 1.5 games after sitting much of a rout against William & Mary out, Jackson has four scores on the year, powering the offense. With a Bud Foster defense on the other side, the Hokies remain in a good spot.

Old Dominion, though getting this game at home, isn’t in a good spot coming in. The Monarchs are 0-3 to start the season with losses to Liberty, Florida International and Charlotte. That doesn’t bode well for their chances on Saturday. If they’re going to do something frisky, though, they’re going to need dual-threat quarterback Steven Williams to come up big.

To the surprise of absolutely no one, the Hokies are heavy favorites in this game, but perhaps not heavy enough given the talent discrepancy between them and the Monarchs. Even still, it’s clear that it would be a historic upset if Old Dominion were to knock of Fuente’s team at home.

Prediction

This is pretty ho-hum, but there’s no chance the Hokies don’t rout the Monarchs on Saturday afternoon. These teams are just on two different levels and Virginia Tech should ultimately not even break a sweat as they get back in the fold and pick up a win.

Final Score: Virginia Tech Hokies 45, Old Dominion Monarchs 13
