The Yankees have locked up a Wild Card spot, and are vying for home-field advantage in the Wild Card game. Unfortunately it looks like the injury bug bit them again.

The New York Yankees are going to the playoffs after their walk-off victory against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday night. Now that they have a playoff spot locked up they’re fighting for home field advantage in the Wild Card game.

Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius wasn’t in the lineup on Sunday afternoon for the Yankees, which was odd to say the least. After the Yankees’ 6-3 defeat at the hands of Orioles on Sunday, manager Aaron Boone revealed why he wasn’t in the lineup.

As it turns out Gregorius suffered torn cartilage in his wrist. He suffered the injury sliding into home on the game winning run. According to Boone there is a chance he may not be back this season.

Gregorius received a cortisone injection in his wrist and will be evaluated in a few days. Either way you look at it this is a huge blow to the Yankees. They can survive his absence offensively as they’ve done it once before this season. The impact will be felt on the defensive end. He’s far and away the teams best defensive infielder and the captain of that infield.

What are the Yankees going to miss offensively? How about a guy that would have had a season with 30-plus home runs and 100 RBI had he not been hurt this season. That’s a pretty big chunk of their offensive production gone from the lineup.

This has really been the story all season for the Bronx Bombers. They lose someone for an extended period of time, and as soon as they start to get healthy someone else ends up on the DL. The Yankees will have to lean on their late season addition Adeiny Hechavarria to stabilize their defense at the minimum.

Gregorius did say after Sunday’s game that he had a high level of optimism that he could return for the Wild Card game. We will see how it plays out, and if he can indeed return in time as he is set to be re-evaluated in a few days.
