With Modern Family starting its tenth season on Sept. 26, it’s the right time to look back, reflect, and rank all the seasons so far.

One of the most consistent shows in the history of television, every season of Modern Family has more than its share of strong, memorable episodes. There have been changes over the years, obviously the leading one of being the kids growing up. Haley, Alex, Luke, Manny, and Lily portray something different in season 9 than they did in the early seasons of the series. It’s the natural transition and progression into adulthood (slowly becoming a teenager for Lily), they can’t be kids forever.

Modern Family has adapted throughout the seasons, expertly crafting storylines as such based on this very concept and bringing this fact to the forefront. It can’t be The Simpsons after all, where Bart and Lisa are able to remain their younger selves presumably forever through the cartoon format. Modern Family has had to tailor their act to the cast’s real life changing ages throughout the years, from the kids going off to college to their relationships as adults. Not to mention touching on subjects like mid-life crisis for their parents, having episodes where Phil and Claire role-play to keep their relationship from growing stale, Gloria’s sister being jealous, failed business ventures, having a son much like later in life in Jay and Gloria’s case. You name it, Modern Family has examined it.

The series has never shied away from taking on a very serious subject and making light of it. Part of the charm the show has always been its realistic take on the more egotistical driven things in life like showing off (when Mitch gets new job and Cam gets a grand piano centerpiece when their friends arrive). Or that sometimes, one doesn’t really want to waste their precious time with people they don’t like (when Jay tells a couple that they should part ways post dinner). That genuine duality on positive and negative traits of the human condition are what make it must see TV.

Let’s take a look at some of the show’s greatest ever moments and countdown to the very difficult to choose top season!
