8. Season 5

Season 5’s highlight episode is the rivalry between Phil Dunphy and Gil Thorpe in “The Feud” (episode 15). There’s something endearing about an old-school feud in a non-friendly game of life one-upmanship between the two relators. The rivalry soon turns even more personal when Luke is matched up with Gil’s son in a wrestling match, and Phil soon turns from telling him to have fun as he usually does to telling him he’s gotta win. At first Jay disagrees with Phil on the direction he’s given Luke until he meets Gil’s father Gunther, and soon he’s cheering Luke to take the win as well.

Meanwhile, Claire is nervous about meeting with a client and agrees to take Lily to the park to keep her mind off it. Cam soon gets a call about a lice outbreak at Lily’s school but decides not to tell her as to not potentially upset her. Claire though soon does in fact acquire lice from Lily and acts oddly all meeting. Actress Julie Bowen (Claire Dunphy) submitted this very episode for consideration after being nominated at the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

Season 5 of Modern Family was exceptionally consistent winning an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series with Ty Burrell (Phil Dunphy) winning for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and Gail Mancuso winning for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell Pritchett) was also nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
